Then I ran Etrecheck (did it yesterday after reading another reply from you to another question) and followed recommendations for major and minor issues it discovered. I have 1) removed INBOX and Important folders from my gmail via web browser 2) started in safe mode and had a friend send a test email succesfully. Thanks for the recommendations to solve my problem.
